Wheel Testing and Certification
Our fully equipped workshop with state of the art equipment, centrally located in Welshpool, can handle all our customers’ wheel & rim testing & certification requirements.
Examination of OTR rim and wheel assemblies
In operation, all rim and wheel assemblies are subjected to loads and forces which can lead to fatigue within the material. This can lead to cracking of the rim or wheel assembly. If cracks are left undetected, the rim/wheel may suffer a catastrophic failure with potential risk to the health and safety of persons in the vicinity. Loss of tyre pressure can be one indication of cracking. Cracks of the rim or wheel assembly are detected by careful inspection of the components.
Wheel and rim assemblies should be visually inspected at regular intervals. Faults or damage found during inspection should be identified, marked and reported to the repairer.
Testing should be carried out at intervals that take into account work-site conditions and usage. To allow for effective monitoring of rim conditions for safety purposes accurate service life history should be recorded, including total hours, hours since last NDT and test reports.
The Process
- Visual Inspection wheels/rims, components to check for mechanical damage, excessive wear, pitting and visual cracking.
- Sand-Blasting to remove anything that would interfere with the interpretation of inspection results, e.g. scale, dirt, grease or paint.
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) of all components of the rim assemblies and wheel assemblies in accordance with Australian Standard AS 4457:1997.
- Each rim is C&C stamped with a unique job and test number and any additional customer compliance specific identification & traceability numbers.
- A comprehensive report and repair quote (if repairs are required) is provided to the customer with a copy of the MPI report containing photographs of significant indications.
Our in house MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspection) testing to AS1171 as referred to in AS4457.2007 is carried out by trained and experienced personnel and supervised by persons qualified to AS3998-2006 / ISO9712:2005 and certified by the Australian Institute for Non Destructive Testing (AINDT).
